Barcelona, Spain

Friday evening I was in bed recuperating from being sick. At around 22h30 my roommate Cassidy got a call from her boyfriend Jean-Philippe (juan filipé as we called him the whole time we were in spain!) saying that he and a friend were going to Barcelona, and to pack up because we were to leave in 20 minutes! We all packed frantically and booked it out of our appartment to meet up with JP and Charles. We drove all night in Charles' VW Golf, and arrived in Barcelona at around 4 in the morning. We walked around a city that truly does not ever sleep, and got drinks (well we girls got cafés) at an Irish pub. After the pub closed, we walked along La Rambla and ate at Subway... at 6am. It was pretty great. After our sandwiches, we experienced the sunrise in Barcelona, as we drove along the coastline. During a 2 hour period of time, Charles was stopped at the alcohol/drug checkpoints 2 times and had to be breathalized. After passing with flying colors, we made our way to the beach where we enjoyed some sun and sand. We climbed up this lifeguard tower to get a view of the coast, but I guess it was illegal, because 2 Spanish po came down to the beach. They were jerks, and were threatening to put Charles in prison for 2 days, but then said to just leave and drive away. We got into Charles' car and started driving. Convinced that we were on drugs or something they pulled us over again so they could arrest Charles. We had to wait for a 3rd officer to come with the brethalizer, the 3rd of the day. When he blew O.OO they had the most stunned confused looks on their faces and made him blow again, but no such luck for them, so they had to let us go. I don't like Spanish cops. The cops here in France are much nicer. That night we went out to enjoy the nightlife of Barcelona, which was really fun. We went to a little bar with some other Americans who we met at our hostel (they were nice enough I suppose, but very very typical American boys) and we hung out there for a bit. Earlier that day we saw these 4 guys doing some crazy breakdancing on the streets, and were surprised when we saw them again at the bar. We took a picture with them, but unfortunately Cassidy lost her camera sometime that night. The next day we went to visit this really neat little park and an interesting church, then drove back home, as Charles had to be at work by 20h. It was such an unexpected trip, but SO much fun. I love Barcelona, and definately plan to go back. It was really fun to travel with my roomies and frenchies! It was an experience, for sure.

  1. Love your trip, Meg--very spontaneous.
Of note, us American boys aren't all too bad ;-)
